An Interview with Hugh Howey, author of Wool

Hugh Howey
Author of Wool
Robyn and I were super thrilled to have the opportunity to interview bestselling author Hugh Howey for our May 2 episode of Tipsy Nerds Book Club. Hugh is the author of Wool, the 2011 self-published book that made Hugh a publishing sensation.

Hugh parlayed his publishing success into the life of his dreams. He is currently living aboard his boat, Wayfinder, and is sailing around the world. We had a chance to catch up with Hugh while he was docked in Brisbane, Australia.

This was a particularly tipsy episode! Check it out:

The drinks for this episode are both fun and delicious. Hugh's favorite cocktail is an Old Fashioned, so we created a new take on an old drink. You can check out the recipe for "Howey's Old Fashioned" on the Tipsy Nerds website. And inspired by the stratified existence of the dwellers of the silo, Robyn created the "Silo 17 Shooter", a super strong flaming cocktail! Drink at your own risk!

Don't Panic! The Tipsy Nerds Guide to the Universe

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams
featured in Episode 3 of Tipsy Nerds Book Club Podcast
I can’t believe we’ve already got Episode 3 of the Tipsy Nerds Book Club podcast out! It feels like just a few weeks ago that I had the idea for this podcast, and Robyn and I have spent over three months learning how to podcast and creating the first few episodes.

We are having a blast reading the books, experimenting with drink recipes to create the best one for the episode, and then, of course, nerding out together about these great Sci-Fi and Fantasy stories.

This episode was particularly fun. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has a recipe within the story for the Galaxy’s best cocktail: the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. The one we came up with is super tasty, but be warned—it will knock you on your backside if you drink too many or too fast! I think we achieved the "brain smashed in by a lemon peel wrapped around a gold brick."

You can subscribe on iTunes here, or listen on GooglePlay here.

And, we’re nerding out this week about Game of Thrones, Season 8, and preparing for the upcoming carnage we all fear is coming. Who lives? Who dies? Will there even be an Iron Throne left? Nerd out with us and hear my favorite fan theory for what happens to Cersei in our latest YouTube video (see below).

Thanks for checking it out :-)

If you’re a fan of Science Fiction & Fantasy stories, and of tasty beverages, then this new podcast is for you!

My podcasting partner Robyn Dabney and I have created a fun podcast that combines the best of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, nerding out and combined it with tasty craft cocktails.

The result?

The Tipsy Nerds Book Club podcast.

Each week we read one of the books from the NPR Top 100 Science Fiction & Fantasy stories list (as voted by their listeners). We recreate a cocktail from the book—or, if the book doesn't mention alcohol—we invent a cocktail inspired by the story. Then we drink the cocktail while we podcast.

Our podcast will also feature fabulous authors as guest hosts or we’ll interview authors of the books we feature.

We’re so excited to announce that the amazing Hugh Howey, author of the international bestseller Wool, will join us as a guest for Episode 4. Can’t wait to hear what Hugh has been up to in the land down under—and what he’s working on now.

Teaser Tuesday:

When writing a series, the story generally changes significantly from beginning to end. I began writing the H.A.L.F. series in 2010! That's seven year's worth of life, experiences and changes in my thinking!

One of the beautiful surprises was the strength of the friendship between Erika and Ian. Their friendship was sorely tested in book two, The Makers. Book 3, ORIGINS, is no walk in the park for them either.

Will their friendship survive the trials of an alien invasion?

H.A.L.F.: ORIGINS (H.A.L.F. 3) arrives in stores August 24, 2017. If you haven’t yet read book 1 (The Deep Beneath), you can get a FREE copy by subscribing to my newsletter. You can purchase books one and two (The Makers) in the Kindle store. And you can Pre-Order ORIGINS here.

Teaser Tuesday: Are Girls Clueless about Guys?

It’s just a little more than three weeks until H.A.L.F.: ORIGINS launches! *squee*

I’m so excited for you all to read this one. Fifteen months in the works. Many pages written that didn't make the cut. Countless cups of coffee. And two romance sub-plots to play with!

Though I never considered a writer of romance, I found in this book that the most enjoyable part was developing the relationships.

My favorite part? Writing in Jack’s point of view. It was fun to channel my inner eighteen-year-old guy! ;-)

Here’s quote from Jack Wilson. You may be surprised when you read to the book to see where and in what context he says this. It may not be what you think!

Do you agree with Jack? Or is he just being clueless?!

I’ve got lots of fun stuff planned to celebrate the end of this epic sci-fi adventure so stay tuned.

Teaser Tuesday: Jack Wilson's Point of View

Meet Jack Wilson from The Makers (H.A.L.F. #2):

We met Jack Wilson in The Deep Beneath (Book 1 of the H.A.L.F. Series). He's a dirty blond, tousled hair guy that prefers flip-flops and T-shirts over dress shoes and button downs. In The Deep Beneath, readers met Jack through the eyes of Erika Holt, his on-again, off-again, on-again (sort of) girlfriend.

Some readers fell in love with Jack and rooted for "Team Jericka." Other readers didn't see the Jack attraction. One of the biggest fans of the book told me she hoped Jack would be killed off to make way for another character that's her fave!

I don't want to spoil anything if you haven't yet read The Deep Beneath, but suffice it to say that things didn't turn out they way Jack and Erika planned. Hell, things didn't turn out the way I'd planned either! The story took a turn at the end that I hadn't anticipated and it has made writing Book 2, The Makers, a lot more interesting!

Lo and behold, Jack has become a point of view character. And I'm determined to make Jack naysayers into Jack Wilson converts.

SECRET TIDBIT ABOUT JACK: Despite looking like he's just rolled out of bed, he actually uses product in his hair to get it to have that messed up look. He uses a sea salt spray and works it into his hair with his fingers to give his hair the beach look without going to the beach.

Not even Erika knows that one!

WHAT'S JACK UP TO IN THE MAKERS?

Without giving too much away, circumstances will bring Jack together with Anna Sturgis. Yep, you heard that name correctly. Anna Sturgis, as in the niece of Commander Lillian Sturgis. I'll give you more insight into Anna in another post, but for now just know that Commander Sturgis isn't the only brainy, beautiful Sturgis woman on our planet. Jack's a loyal guy and wants nothing more than to have Erika back in his arms. But will his heart remain true to Erika? Or will he find himself falling for the enemy?

LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT JACK: Jack and his mom, Kathleen Wilson, share their home with a somewhat psycho cat named Tater.

JACK'S THOUGHTS ON CHIVALRY:

"I know it's old fashioned, but I hold doors open for women. My mom said, 'Girls want a knight, Jack, whether they admit it or not.' And she's my mom and a smart lady so I figured she'd never steer me wrong.

But then I met Erika. Maybe I fell for the girl who's the exception to the rule."

In my recent interview of Jack, I asked him, "What do you loathe about yourself?" Here's his answer:

"I wouldn't say I loathe anything. I don't think like that. I don't get flipped out enough about things to hate on it. So no, I don't hate myself. That's not to say I wouldn't change a few things if I could. Like being taller.

And I guess sometimes - like lately - I wish I was more … Well when that guy had Erika and was hurting her? I had a shot, but I froze. I should have been the one that pulled the trigger."

This memory haunts Jack. I wonder how it will affect him? And will he do things differently if he ever faces a similar situation?

What do you bet he'll have a chance soon to find out?! ;-)

New Teen SciFi on Audible - H.A.L.F.: The Deep Beneath

You asked for it and here it is: H.A.L.F.: The Deep Beneath audiobook! Narrator Andrew Tell did an amazing job brining this story to life. I especially like the way he switched so effortlessly between male and female characters. I'm particularly fond of how he portrayed Commander Sturgis and H.A.L.F. 9.

If you're an audiobook fan, please check out H.A.L.F. on audible.

Sci Fi Friday: If Sigourney's In, I'm In

Movie Poster for original Alien, 1979
When I first heard that there was going to be a reboot of the movie Alien, I yawned. Reboots are always ... Well, reboots. If a remake is faithful to the original product that we love so much, then it is predictable because we've already been there, done that. If it's not faithful to the original, then we complain because it changes the thing we love so much.

And then there's the magic of a first. Some movies, like music, have a synergy that only exists the first time around. Any art that become phenomenon has this synergy. It's complex and is about more than the artists but also includes the audience.

When Alien appeared back in 1979, it came on the heels of the comparatively childlike Star Wars. Hans Solo, the bad boy of the film, is a cartoonish space pirate compared to Sigourney Weaver's Ripley.

If the two were in a fight, I'd put my money on Ripley to kick Solo's ass.

Star Wars gave us R2D2, C3PO and Ewoks. Cute, sometimes cuddly characters.

Alien gave us this:

Alien art from Neill Blomkamp's Instagram
Alien ushered us, not so gently, into an age where all kinds of things come out of the sky, hellbent on destroying humankind (Thor, Transformers, Independence Day, Mars Attacks ... just a few that came to mind - please add to the list in the comments section). Star Wars was our age of innocence. Alien was our coming of age.

I saw the original Alien in the movie theatre when it first came out and can still remember yelling out with surprise (as did most in the theater) when that alien popped out of the guy's stomach. I've seen it several times since and I still jump at that moment - even though I know it's coming. The movie has a pervading dark tension that builds and builds up to that moment. You know bad shit's going to happen. You just don't know what or when.

And then there's Ripley. Smart, sassy, mother of all bad mother f***in women who will kick your sorry ass ... Ripley.
Sigourney Weaver on the set of the original Alien movie, 1979. Corbis
Sigourney Weaver pretty much invented the strong female lead for Sci Fi media. Sure, there are plenty of strong female characters in the world of story before Ripley. But I can't think of one in film prior to Alien that had a female character that could kick ass the way Ripley did.
Linda Hamilton (with cut arms to die for) in Terminator II:Judgment Day (19991) owes her bad assedness to Weaver paving the way for this type of character.

In fact, Weaver paved the way for a lot of us. Seeing Ripley on the screen back when I was a kid allowed me to see that a woman can save herself. Ripley looks that alien bitch with two sets of teeth in the face and says eat it.

So Neill Blomkamp wants to give us his take on Alien? And media touts it as from the director or Elysium and Chappie. Well, that made me snore. I wouldn't exactly call those two movies a great sci fi pedigree (some of you may disagree and if you do, feel free to tell me so in the comments).

But somehow or other, Neill convinced Sigourney to come along for the ride.
If Sigourney's in, I'm in. I look forward to seeing how she'll fit into the Alien world (re)created by Blomkamp nearly 40 years after the original (damn, that's a long time!).

Just please, Neill, don't try to make her more "feminine" - more likable - like they did in the second film, Aliens. So typical of Hollywood, they had to give her a kid to take care of (1986 Aliens, written and directed by James Cameron). So many Hollywood stories give us female characters that have a kid slung to their hip, even if they're toting a gun with the other hand (and typical of Hollywood too to put kids, dogs, and  yes, Ewoks, into movies to cuteify them, perhaps thinking it will make the franchise appeal to a larger audience).

So go forth, Neill Blomkamp, and revision Alien. But please, while your re-envisioning what Alien can be, don't take away from us the strong, self-reliant Ripley that we love.

Premier of the Video Trailer for H.A.L.F.: The Deep Beneath

Recently I posted a poll about whether or not readers paid attention to book trailers when interested in a book. The poll question was simple: "Do you view video trailers for books?"

Interestingly, the poll came out in favor of book trailers. The final vote was 67% in favor of trailers to 33% who do not view trailers for books.

My ulterior motive for the poll was to help me decide whether or not to create a book trailer for my newest release, H.A.L.F.: The Deep Beneath. The majority rules! A book trailer has thus been created.

So without further ado, here is the trailer for H.A.L.F., created, produced and edited by yours truly.

Make sure to leave a comment and let me know what you think.

How will I procrastinate writing the next book now that the trailer is done?! ;-)

H.A.L.F. Is HERE! New Sci Fi Book by Natalie Wright

H.A.L.F.: The Deep Beneath
by Natalie Wright
What does it take to write a novel?

For my most recent novel, the stats are something like this:

Four years, three complete rewrites, four Moleskine notebooks, hundreds of cups of coffee, three content editors, six beta readers, several bottles of wine, two different covers, a gazillion Reese's cups, a trip to the Roswell museum of UFOs in New Mexico, and hundreds of hours with my butt glued to a chair, fingers virtually numb from typing.

There may be a few exaggerations in there, but it's mostly true. ;-)

But all the hours lead to this moment of Yay! Hooray! Booyah!

H.A.L.F.: The Deep Beneath e-book is available for pre-order on Amazon. *raises a glass and drinks* If you'd like to order your Kindle copy, click the Amazon link, hit pre-order and boosh! It'll be delivered to your account on 1/29 when it releases.

And, for those of you that enjoy the feel of paper in your paws, the paperback is available now on CreateSpace and Amazon. I've even got a spiffy coupon code for CreateSpace. Just enter this coupon code for 25% Off. You're welcome ;-)

And what's this? A hardcover is coming you say?

Yep. Hardcover baby. The firm feel and weight of a hardcover will roll your way in early March.

It's time to party. To raise the roof. To bask in the glow of pulling that manuscript kicking and screaming into the world!

I really did have a blast writing H.A.L.F. It's the most fun book I've written so far and I hope that readers have as much fun reading it as I had writing it.

I'd love to hear what you think. Reviews on Amazon are a plus. Dropping me a line or comments for bonus points.

Now time to get back to work. I have four more books to write in the H.A.L.F. series. :0

From the Back Cover:

H.A.L.F. 9 has taken his first breath of desert air and his first steps in the human world. Created to be a weapon, he proved too powerful for his makers, hidden from humans and sedated. But H.A.L.F. 9 has escaped the underground lab he called home, and the sedation has worn off. He has never been more alive. More powerful. Or more deadly.

Erika Holt longs to ride her motorcycle east until pavement gives way to shore. She bides her time until graduation when she’ll escape the trailer she shares with her alcoholic mother and memories of her dead father. But a typical night in the desert with friends thrusts Erika into a situation more dangerous than she ever imagined.

Circumstances push the two together, and each must make a fateful choice. Will Erika help H.A.L.F. 9 despite her “don’t get involved” rule? And will H.A.L.F. 9 let Erika live even though he was trained to kill?

The two may need to forget their rules and training if either is to survive the dangers of the deep beneath them.

3 Loglines for H.A.L.F.

I've been working on a spiffy log line for H.A.L.F., my speculative sci fi-ish novel that launches in March. For anyone not familiar with a logline, it's a one sentence (short) summary of the big idea of the book. It's the "elevator pitch".

After playing around with it for some time, I've come up with three and would like your opinion. Which of these do you think is the most intriguing? Which one makes you interested to know more? Or have I missed the mark completely?

Please drop a comment below and let me know your honest opinion. And thanks so much for dropping by :-D

1. When a teenager liberates an alien-human hybrid from a government lab, she triggers an inter-stellar war.

2. Three teens become fugitives when they help an alien-human hybrid escape a government lab.

3. While inter-stellar war looms, a teen must liberate the government's top secret weapon or be terminated.

So let me know which is best for you - #1, #2 or #3 - and why :-) Thanks!

Manic Monday: What's Up Natalie?

I'm not sure if I actually have any regular faithful readers of this blog who read what I post here. Or if the thousands of "hits" each month are bots.  But I'm writing this post in faith that there are some actual human beings who read what I write here.

So if you are a human being reading this and if you have read my blog for a while, you may have noticed that over the past year or so (*scratches head and says "Has it really been that long?"*) I have been inconsistent in posting. Yeah, I've posted Writer Wednesday spotlights of other writers. Sure, there have been some Sci Fi Friday posts. And yes, there have been posts about my most recent release (Emily's Heart).

But when is the last time I wrote a Manic Monday post? I can't remember.

Anyway, I have reasons (numerous) that I've been lax in my blogging. Some are lame, like feeling like since no one comments much on my blog that I may in fact be visited solely by Internet bots rather than real people so what's the point in writing? Or that I was busy - blah, blah, blah.

But mainly I've been lax with my blogging because I've been dealing with some heavy shit in my life.

"What kind of heavy shit?" you ask.

First, there was my retirement from the practice of law in June of last year. You may be thinking that such an event should have freed up time for me to blog my brains out. And that's logical.  But in truth, saying good-bye to my profession was a major life-change event which I'd wanted for sooooo long and was glad for but when it actually happened sort of took me by surprise at being sad about it. In recent years I had worked (very) part-time at being a lawyer and had stopped taking litigation cases so I wasn't in court. It had become a small part of my life taking third seat to being a mom (always first) and my writing. But still, it had been a major part of my life - and my identity - for over twenty years (saying that makes me feel fucking old).

My very wise husband who knows me sometimes too well warned me. "Give yourself six months, Natalie." I rolled my eyes and let his words of wisdom go in one ear and out the other (as I do too frequently). "Whatever," I thought.

Guess what happened? He was right. (Don't you hate it when your mate is right?) It indeed took me about six months to fully release the old job and identity and to get into a new routine and be okay with the whole thing. It was like for the second half of last year, I'd get up and get my kid off to school then sit at my desk and play at being a writer, all the while feeling guilty that I wasn't really "working" or having anxiety that somehow I was neglecting some serious shit that needed done, and then feeling worse because I was feeling down about retiring to write full-time when so many writers I know don't have the opportunity to do that though they want to, so get over yourself all ready and be fucking happy! I wasn't happy and then felt guilty about not being happy.

But wait, there was more. And this is the heavy stuff that as I writer I feel I should be writing about and talking about but mainly I want to just ignore it and hope it goes away. At the end of the summer last year, my mom was diagnosed with cancer.

For the fifth time.

And it's bad. Really bad. Like the oncologist using the word "palliative chemo" kind of bad.

As if that weren't heavy enough, on the heels of us finding out about my mom's cancer, my dad had a stroke. He has been in and out (mostly in) a nursing home ever since. He's alive, but extremely diminished.

My mom is only 73. My dad 76.

They aren't that old. And I've had to face the fact over the past six months that it is more likely than not that neither of my parents will make it to the age of 80. In fact, it is quite possible that one of them will be gone before the end of the year.

I just typed that without crying. For months I could not have.

The story of my mom's cancer is actually one of hope and of sort-of miracles and of human strength and endurance. It's a story of pain and relationships and love and family. It's a story that could educate others with the BRCA1 gene (my mom is BRCA1 positive). It's a story that many may relate to and find interest in.

But I'm not able to write it. At least not now.

When I first found out my mom's dire diagnosis, my writer friends said "write about it." It was good advice. And I tried.

Some people can wrest poetry from pain. I'm not one of them.

Grief shuts me down. Sorrow makes me withdraw to the within. And try as I might to exorcise it through words, it does not work.

I was able to complete my third novel and maybe I did channel some of my pain into the prose. Emily's Heart is, after all, an Apocalyptic story that tends to the darker side of things. But *spoiler alert* the end is a happy one and I was stuck for months last year, unable to wrest that happy ending out of myself because I did not feel happy. The fact that it finally came out of me at all is a sort of small miracle that I can't explain.

Over the past nine months or so, my writing was filled mainly with anger and angst, heartache and unhappiness.

So I spared you all of that and kept my blog a cancer and sickness-free zone.

The good news is that as this year progresses, I'm feeling more and more able to write without it being filled with misery. The shadowy veil of sad feelings is lifting and I'm more focused on the here and now - on the living - than on things past.

I'm in the mood to celebrate. I wrote three books!! Can I hear a woot, woot?! I completed a whole series (The Akasha Chronicles). *Does happy dance*

I am an incredibly blessed person to be able to devote my working hours full-time to doing what I love to do. I get to write the stories that fill my head. And I get to go out to book events and meet readers and chat story with them (one of my absolute favorite pastimes).

I have a wonderful daughter, husband and three furry critters that I share my house and life with. And I am alive, and this is no small miracle.

So as I move with more hope and optimism than I've had in a while into the middle of this year, here is what's coming on my blog and in my writing:

Natalie Wright, Manic Monday
1. Manic Monday will return! I don't promise that I'll have a Manic Monday post every week, but I am feeling the itch to speak my *manic* mind so stay tuned for my rants, ravings, musings and Monday weirdness.

2. Writer Wednesday is here to stay. In the past, I have devoted Wednesdays to featuring other writers and occasionally to posting writing tips. Both of those things will continue to happen on Wednesdays. (If you are a writer and would like to be featured on my Writer Wednesday, please shoot me an e-mail to NatWritesYA (at) gmail (dot) com and we'll speak of it).

But I also have a new feature that I'll add to Writer Wednesday in upcoming weeks that will appeal to writers of all makes, models and types - and will get the writerly conversation going.

3. Sci Fi Friday continues. For any of you paying attention, you may have noticed my new Friday feature, Sci Fi Friday. These posts are about scientific discoveries that I come across that strike me as having science fiction implications. I also reserve that time to review science fiction books or movies, OR generally to post anything science of science fiction related.

H.A.L.F., by
Natalie Wright
Arrives Spring, 2015
I'll continue to devote Fridays to all things science and sci fi as I gear up to release the first book of my next series, H.A.L.F., a young adult science fiction series. While my last series was (mainly) fantasy, I'll be writing science fiction (mostly) for the foreseeable future AND science stuff fascinates me. So if you, too, enjoy hearing about science fact that seems more like science fiction, then make sure you hang out with me on Fridays to discuss new technology and scientific discoveries.

So that's what's up with Natalie. What's up with you? Drop me a line in the comments below or you can reach me by e-mail at NatWritesYA (at) gmail (dot) com.

Thank you for reading to the end :-)
